Museums and ancient battlefields - Motya 397 BC

Motya was an ancient Carthaginian city on an island off the west coast of Sicily, near Lilybaeum (modern Marsala). It was originally a commercial station or emporium, but gradually rose to be a flourishing and important town, surrounded by mighty walls. and linked to the mainland by a causeway today submerged.

Mozia è stata un centro punico sin dall'VII secolo. Inizialmente era un semplice emporio. COn il tempo è diventata una città ricca e dotata di imponenti mura collegata alla terraferma da una strada oggi sommersa (che comunque si intravede ancora).

It was one of the most interesting page of the war against Carthage and Syracuse, which used several siege machines to overcome the fierce resistance of the inhabitants.

Nel 397 AC nel pieno dello scontro tra Dionisio di Siracusa e i Cartaginesi è stata oggetto di un assedio e devestata dall'esercito greco e mercenario, che tra l'altro, fece ampio uso di diverse macchine da assedio. Diodoro al libro 14 ne fa un resoconto molto interessante.
 
Nowadays Motya is a beautifull place to visit. You take a small boat and cross the lagoon. The island is a wide archaeological site were you can walk under olives tree and look at the gate ruins, the tophet and the khoton.

Oggi Mozia è un bellissmo sito da visitare. Ci si arriva in barchetta attraverso la laguna. dopodiche ci si perde in quello che è un enorme sito archeologico a cielo aperto, numerosi i resti di mura e le porte cittadine, ma anche il tophet e il kothon.
